Are You Prepared For A Hurricane?

The best way to protect your family from the effects of a natural disaster is to have a disaster plan! A natural disaster can be scary for those who haven’t faced it’s danger, but we’re here to help you get through it! The most important rule, when dealing with a natural disaster, is to stay calm. The storm will come whether you’re having a panic attack or not, so it’s best to be level headed and well prepared!

 

If you have pets, don’t forget to put them in your plans! If you intend on evacuating your home, do not leave your pets behind! Our furry friends can not survive on their own and many are afraid of large storms. It is up to you to help save your pet’s life. To prepare your entire family for a hurricane, contact local hotels and ask if the “no pet” policy can be waived in an emergency. Keeping a list of “pet-friendly” places will help you narrow down the best point of safety. Red Cross shelters accept all service animals who assist their loved ones with disabilities. Contacting local shelters will provide you with the best information about emergency boarding and foster care for pets in a disaster.

A natural disaster is not prepared for until your supply kit list is checked off, and your family has everything they’ll need to get through it! Below you’ll find our disaster supply checklist to you prepare for a natural disaster.

• Water: At Least 1-Gallon Per Person for 3-7 days
• Food: At Least Enough for 3-7 days
  • Non-Perishable Packaged or Canned Food/Juices
  • Food for Infants or the Elderly

• Clothing: Seasonal/Rain Gear/Sturdy Shoes

• Moisture Wipes
• Flashlight and Extra Batteries
• Radio: Battery Operated with NOAA Weather Station
• Cash: Banks and ATMs may not be open
• Keys
• Toys, Books, and Games
• Important Documents: Kept in a Water Proof Container
  • Insurance, Medical Records, Social Security Card
• Tools: Keep Available During the Storm.
• Vehicle Fuel Tanks Filled
• Pet Care
  • Proper Identification/Immunization Records
  • Ample Supply of Food and Water
  • A Carrier/Cage and Leash
  • Medications
  • Current Photo

 

One of the most important precautions you can take to reduce damage to your home and property is to protect the areas where outside wind may enter. It is important to strengthen the exterior of your home so wind and debris do not tear large openings in it! You can do this by protecting and reinforcing these five critical areas, the Roof, Straps, Windows, Doors, and Garage Doors.

 If you don’t have flood insurance, the National Flood Insurance Program, is a pre-disaster flood mitigation and insurance protection program designed to reduce the escalating cost of disasters. The National Flood Insurance Program makes federally backed flood insurance available to residents and business owners. Flood damage is not usually covered by homeowners insurance. Check your policy to make sure your family is fully prepared!
